At
Inner Strength Counseling, we offer Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy—an evidence-based approach specifically
designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma and
distressing life experiences.
EMDR
is particularly effective for those who have experienced:
Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Childhood
trauma or abuse
Domestic
violence
Military
or combat trauma
First
responder-related trauma
Grief
and loss
Anxiety
and panic
Phobias
Low
self-worth and negative self-beliefs
Rather
than requiring clients to talk in detail about the trauma, EMDR
focuses on changing the way that the memory is stored in the
brain—helping individuals feel less triggered and more in control
of their emotions and responses.
Our
sessions are conducted in a safe, structured, and supportive
environment that follows trauma-informed care principles. You’ll be
guided through each phase of the EMDR process at a pace that feels
right for you, helping you access the brain’s natural ability to
heal.
Benefits
of EMDR may include:
Reduced
emotional distress tied to traumatic memories
Decreased
anxiety and hypervigilance
Increased
emotional regulation
Improved
self-esteem and sense of safety
Greater
clarity and peace of mind
Our
clinician is certified in EMDR and has experience working with
individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including survivors of
abuse, military personnel, first responders, and those navigating
complex trauma.
If
you’re ready to begin healing from the past and reclaim your
present, EMDR may be the right path forward.
What
to Expect with EMDR Therapy
At
Inner Strength Counseling, we understand that starting something
new—especially trauma therapy—can feel overwhelming. EMDR therapy
is a structured process that moves at your pace and ensures safety
and comfort at every step. Here’s what to expect:
Intake and Assessment: We
begin by understanding your history, current concerns, and goals for
therapy. This helps us determine whether EMDR is the right approach
for you.
Preparation Phase: Before
processing any traumatic memories, we work together to build
emotional regulation skills and create internal resources to help you
feel safe and grounded. You’ll learn techniques to manage distress
and reduce overwhelm.
Identifying Target Memories: We’ll
collaboratively identify past experiences or beliefs that are
contributing to current distress. These memories become the focus of
EMDR processing.
Desensitization and Reprocessing: Through
bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones),
you’ll begin to process the memory in a new way—reducing
emotional charge and allowing your brain to refile the experience as
“in the past.”
Installation of Positive Beliefs: Once
the emotional distress linked to the memory has reduced, we work to
strengthen positive, empowering beliefs to replace previously held
negative ones (e.g., “I am safe now”
instead of “I am powerless”).
Body Scan and Closure: We
help you tune into your body to ensure all residual tension or
distress has been resolved and use grounding techniques to close each
session with emotional stability.
Reevaluation: In
future sessions, we’ll assess your progress and determine if
further targets need processing.

Therapy FAQs
Q:
How long does EMDR therapy take?
A:
The length of EMDR therapy varies depending on the complexity of the
trauma and your individual needs. Some clients experience relief in
just a few sessions, while others require more time. Your therapist
will guide the process based on your readiness and comfort.
Q:
Will I have to talk in detail about my trauma?
A:
No. EMDR does not require you to verbally describe your trauma in
detail. You simply focus on the memory internally while the therapist
guides you through the process using bilateral stimulation.
Q:
Is EMDR safe?
A:
Yes, EMDR is a well-researched and safe therapeutic approach when
conducted by a trained and certified therapist. At Inner Strength
Counseling, EMDR is offered by a certified EMDR clinician with
experience in trauma-informed care.
Q:
Can EMDR help with issues other than PTSD?
A:
Absolutely. EMDR is effective for a range of issues, including
anxiety, phobias, grief, low self-esteem, performance anxiety, and
more.
Q:
What if I feel overwhelmed during EMDR?
A:
We move at your pace. In the preparation phase, we teach grounding
skills and coping techniques to ensure you feel safe and in control.
You can pause or stop at any time during the session.
Q:
Is EMDR right for me?
A:
If you’ve experienced trauma or feel stuck in negative patterns,
EMDR may be a helpful option. During our initial sessions, we’ll
assess whether EMDR is a good fit for your needs and comfort level.
