What
to Expect
Collaborative Assessment We
begin with an in-depth intake to understand your service history,
symptoms, and goals. We tailor treatment to meet the needs of your
role and experiences, while also recognizing the impact of cumulative
stress, hypervigilance, and moral injury.
Building Internal Resources Before
we begin any trauma processing, we ensure you have strong emotional
regulation and grounding skills. This step is crucial for those who
are often in “always on” mode and have
difficulty slowing down.
Targeting Service-Related Experiences We
identify the moments, memories, or beliefs that continue to trigger
distress—whether it’s from combat, critical incidents, loss of a
partner, or feelings of guilt, helplessness, or betrayal.
Reprocessing Through EMDR Using
bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or audio tones), we
help your brain reprocess these events and move them from “still
happening” to “happened in the past.”
EMDR allows your nervous system to release the distress while
reinforcing healthier, more adaptive beliefs.
Moving Forward Many
first responders and veterans find that after EMDR, they can think
about the memory without feeling overwhelmed—and finally begin to
feel peace. From there, we help you build new patterns and move
forward with clarity and purpose.
FAQs
– EMDR for First Responders, Military & Veterans
Q:
I’ve had trauma for years. Can EMDR still help?
Yes.
EMDR has been proven effective for both recent and longstanding
trauma. Whether your trauma is from combat, cumulative exposure, or a
single critical incident, EMDR can help reduce the emotional charge
and give you more control over your reactions.
Q:
Do I have to relive the trauma or talk about it in detail?
No.
One of the benefits of EMDR is that you do not need to verbalize
every detail of your trauma. You will recall the memory internally
while the therapist guides you through the reprocessing.
Q:
I’m trained to suppress emotion. What if I shut down or get
overwhelmed?
We
expect that response. Many in high-stakes roles are trained to be
composed and emotionally regulated. In EMDR, we go at your pace and
focus first on helping you feel safe and in control. If anything
becomes too much, we stop or pause as needed.
Q:
Can EMDR help with survivor’s guilt, moral injury, or
hypervigilance?
Absolutely.
EMDR helps address not just the memory, but the beliefs that have
formed around the memory. This includes shame, guilt, or internalized
responsibility that can linger long after an event.
Q:
Will this affect my job or clearance?
Seeking
mental health support is a sign of strength, not weakness. At Inner
Strength Counseling, we maintain strict confidentiality and do not
report to employers or agencies unless there’s a safety concern.
We’re here to support you—not to jeopardize your career.
Q:
How long will EMDR therapy take?
It
varies. Some people experience relief within a few sessions; others
may take longer depending on the severity and duration of symptoms.
We’ll work together to make sure you’re getting what you need.
You’ve
spent your life protecting and serving others. Now it’s time to
prioritize your own healing.
If
you’re ready to explore EMDR therapy or have more questions, we
offer a free consultation to determine if it’s the right fit for
you.
